My name is Elbert Smith. I served in the United States Marine Corps for 4 years from1972-1976 of which 13 months was in Vietnam as a combat engineer. Once completing military service after obtaining the rank of sergeant, I got married and had 3 children. I worked most of my life as truck driver enjoying the freedom of solitude and being my own boss. After driving trucks became more difficult as I got older I attempted early retirement but got into trouble with too much time on my hands and found myself in veteran’s treatment court. The 18 months I spent in that program changed my life for the better. I became a model citizen becoming a leader and role model to the younger veterans in the court. After completion of that process, I realized I wanted to work again and with assistance and recommendation of the VA counselors I considered employment in the VA system and obtained my new job as a transportation officer. In my spare time I collect classic cars and I have continued my entrepreneurial spirit by saving gold with Karatbars International. With my new job,.I’m looking forward to helping other veterans learn about their benefits and navigate through the VA system.
